YOUTH IN PHILANTHROPY ANNOUNCES 2007 GRANTS

Omaha Area High School Students Grant $10,000 to Local Organizations

Omaha-area high school students announced the recipients of $10,000 in grants from the Youth in Philanthropy program, a partnership between the Omaha Community Foundation and the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce’s Youth Leadership Omaha. Students in the program represent 34 metro area high schools and are juniors and seniors academically. This program was generously supported by Omaha Community Foundation donors Mike and Nancy McCarthy, the Carmen and John Gottschalk Foundation, and the Mammel Family Foundation.

Youth in Philanthropy students determine the focus of the grant making, solicit proposals from the nonprofit community and select the grant recipients. This year, students chose to distribute grants to charitable programs focused on the theme “promoting healthy relationships.”

Recipients of the 2007 grants include:

  • Omaha Street School: Tea for Teens Leadership Program, $1,000. Encouraging teenage women to pursue healthy lifestyles by researching women in leadership.
  • Special Olympics Nebraska: 2007 Athletic Competition, $2,000.  This annual event tilizes several hundred volunteers including students, to break down stereotypes and biases surrounding the intellectually disabled.
  • Credit Advisors Foundation: Micah House Women’s Shelter Teen Financial Literacy, $3,000.  Providing education to middle school and high school students addressing areas where the teens can contribute to the success of the family and learn skills typically taught by role models.
  • Great Plains Girl Scout Council: In the School Day (ISD), $1,000. Gang and Violence Prevention Program promoting healthy relationships by providing awareness and understanding about the factors involved in youth violence and gang-related activities.
  • R E S P E C T 2: Teen Recognition Events, $3,000.  Assistance in covering the cost of illboards to share the work of students, the cost of a reception where students are recognized and the cost of student awards.

BUILDING STRONG FAMILIES FUND

Special Olympics Nebraska received a grant in the amount of $3000 from the Building Strong Families Fund in Lincoln, Nebraska to be used toward obtaining the use of the Lincoln YWCA Facilities.  These facilities can be used for meetings, practices or competitions.

MID-NEBRASKA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Special Olympics Nebraska has received a grant from the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation in the amount of $1000.  This grant will be used to help defray the costs for the Regional Director to obtain the necessary tools to effect change in the lives of intellectually disabled individuals living in Mid-Nebraska.  By having a Regional Director immediately accessible in this part of the State, Special Olympics Nebraska will be able to offer our services to additional eligible individuals, helping them improve their lives and become more productive members of their communities.
