1. When is “the” Special Olympics?
Most people are familiar with our Annual Summer Games at the
Creighton University Campus in Omaha but are not aware of the
year-round state and area competitions hosted throughout the
state. Our athletes have the opportunity to compete in 7different
state-level competitions. Before attending state, athletes must
train and compete at the area level to advance to state.
2. Is there a maximum age for participation in Special Olympics
Nebraska?
Individuals can train as early as 6 years old but are not able
to compete at the state level until the age of 8 with NO maximum
age limitation for participation.
3. Do we accept used trophies?
NO. Special Olympics awards medals to athletes placing 1st,
2nd or 3rd at any competition.
4. How many athletes are served by Special Olympics Nebraska?
Over 3,000 individuals 8 to 83 years of age participate from
110 communities in Nebraska.
5. Globally, how many countries is Special Olympics currently
in?
There are more than a million athletes in over 150 nations
worldwide.
6. How many sports are offered by Special Olympics Nebraska?
Special Olympics Nebraska offers 19 different sports.
7. How long must an athlete train in order to compete at a
area or state competition?
An athlete must train for 8 weeks before competing at any area
event and must place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in order to advance to
any state-level competition.
